What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure, it is not the same as vaginal rejuvenation.  Labiaplasty surgery consists of the reshaping or reducing the labia minora.  Several phrases are used to describe this procedure, labia reduction, labial surgery, and labioplasty. In all, this surgical procedure refers to removal of long, large or asymmetric labia.

Who needs Labiaplasty?

Women who have suffered birth trauma, tissue stretching, age, genetic, and improper surgical healing are the usual reasons for requesting labia reduction.

How long is the surgery?

Labia surgery typically takes about 60 minutes to complete depending whether or not a rectocele or enterocele has to be repaired and if mesh or tissues are used to repair the vaginal hernias.

History of Labiaplasty:

It was only several years ago when cosmetic vaginal surgery was attacked by medical practitioners as barbaric, unnecessary, and frivolous. However, baby boomers drove the acceptance of these procedures and fueled the growth of this subspecialty. Both young women wanting a sleeker appearance of their genitals and older women wanting to repair the anatomical changes of childbirth and time are in the forefront of demand to look and feel young again.

Labiaplsty Surgeons and Cost:

There are many surgeons who perform these surgeries, however, very few who perform it in adequate volume to be considered an expert.  The cost of labiaplasty is approximately $5,000. Insurance companies do not typically cover cosmetic vaginal surgery.  Labiaplasty can be combined with pelvic prolapse repair and vaginal tightening at the same time.  Some women even have their liposuction and breast enlargement done concurrently as part of a “mommy makeover.”
